4 · Interview Q&A
What is your book about and who did you write it for?
The book is written for the general public to enable the reader to gain knowledge about the basics in biology and physiology on stem cells and to understand the difference between false advertising and the validity of scientific research. The book should also serve as a guide for the consumer to ask the right questions before considering stem cell therapies. Furthermore, the book is written for healthcare providers interested in modern medicine and regenerative therapy to get an inside scoop of everything that is known at the current time for stem cell research, clinical results as well as regulatory issues. It also shows the enormous potential of this most pronounced advancement in modern biotechnology.
The title of the book indicates there are secrets in the world of stem cell therapies. Tell us a couple of secrets that we should know.
It’s noted that you’ve participated in countless clinical trials using stem cells for different conditions over the last 25 years. Where are stem cells being used now & how effective are they?
Every single published study using stem cells has shown the beneficial effects for acute injuries and chronic degenerative disease.
Our own research has shown that in particular for the wide spectrum of vascular diseases that spread from heart diseases to strokes to sexual dysfunction to peripheral ciculatory problems, stem cells are very effective in inducing angiogenesis, which means the building of new blood vessels that result in improved perfusion and oxygenation, which in turn promotes healing.
The book has dense scientific information on stem cell therapies. Which parts of your book are most important for general public to read?
For the public it appears most important to understand the enormous potential for stem cells to regenerate damaged tissue in general, an ability that some of our organs still have (such as the skin or in part the liver), while others do not (such as the heart or the brain).
How many years have you been working with stem cells and in what capacity?
I was among the first in the world using embryonic cells and stem cells in experimental animal models demonstrating that transplanted cells into damaged heart tissue in recipients can not only survive for several months but also contribute to improved heart function over time, which was the beginning of modern stem cell therapy in and around 1998, which then was followed by clinical trials using stem cell therapies in patients with heart disease. I have been actively involved in basic research as well as in clinical studies in stem cell research over 25 years as principal investigator and co-investigator and I have published on stem cell therapy in international peer reviewed scientific journals from 1998 til today.
As a cardiologist, how can stem cells assist you in helping patients? Could these therapies be cure all for people affected by heart problems? Why or why not.
So far, there is no cure for any diseases using stem cell therapy (with the exception of certain cancers using stem cell transplantation). For heart disease, stem cells have shown to reduce inflammation, improve tissue perfusion, and replace damaged tissue in patients with congestive heart failure and severe coronary artery disease and can be seen as an adjunct to standard therapy in the very near future. Further research is needed to explore additional benefits for prevention of sudden death, prevention of the progression of heart disease, and even of cardiovascular death in general, which is the number one cause of death in the world.
Financially, stem cells seem unreachable to the average person. Will Insurance companies ever pay for these therapies or will the rich only benefit?
At the current time, stem cell therapy is neither FDA approved nor covered by any insurance companies. In order to get there, it will require thousands of studied patient data, which then will require hundreds of millions of research dollars. Big pharma and big tech is not much interested in funding something that might eradicate aging and disease, therefore it will take a very long time before stem cell therapy will be widely accepted or paid for. For this reason we are organizing fundraisers to support stem cell therapy for research but also for individuals who cannot afford paying for it but might benefit from it.
We learned you are doing an educational stem cell event for the public in May tied with a fundraising component for the Ukraine. Tell us about the event.
The event on May 18 in Newport Beach is a day after the official book launch on May 17, 2022. It is basically the first public appearance showcasing the book and the science behind it in small lectures for healthcare professionals but also for the interested public revealing the secrets of stem cell therapy and its tremendous potential for modern medicine. The event is to raise awareness for the need to support stem cell research combined with a fundraiser for stem cell research, but also for humanitarian aid for Ukraine since myself as well as some of my colleagues are involved in providing help and support, including one of my colleagues (Dr Janette Nesheiwat), who just came back from a medical mission to Ukraine and who is going back for two more trips at the end of May and in June.
Finally, what aspects of stem cell therapy is most confusing for patients and what is your best advice?
What is the state of stem cell therapies in America as compared to other countries?
In the past, stem cell therapies were more restricted in the US, therefore, many patients went to Europe getting stem cell injections (Kobe Bryant as an example, went to Germany for knee injections). Nowadays, still many go abroad (Mel Gibson goes to Panama), mainly because they think that stem cell injections are not allowed in the US, which is a myth. Stem cell injections are allowed, but heavily regulated, and not officially FDA approved or recommended. The sources and the handling of stem cell products in the US in general undergo much stricter regulations than in any other part of the world, ensuring usually much more safety and a much higher quality.
Our group has dedicated protocols for stem cell therapies for different conditions and data are critically and systematically analyzed and scientifically interpreted and then published, in contrast to other countries where usually no follow up data or scientific analyses are provided.
What are some promising therapeutic stem cell therapy solutions for heart disease that you are excited about?
As a transplant cardiologist, I started using stem cell therapies for patients with congestive heart failure who were deemed to be candidates for heart transplantation, but could not get it, usually because of contraindications, advanced age or concomitant diseases. In particular in these patients, we saw a tremendous improvement of functional capacity and improved quality of life (though no cure of heart disease), with a significant improvement of symptoms and less need for hospital admissions. Furthermore, in patients with severe peripheral vascular disease, usually secondary to advanced diabetes, we treated many patients with non healing foot ulcers deemed for leg amputations in whom we could save the legs with simple stem cell injections to heal the ulcers, close open wounds, and improve the circulation tremendously.
What are the public’s biggest misconceptions about stem cell therapies?
If you google stem cell therapies for something like erectile dysfunction, there are within 0.2 seconds more than 90 million hits, however, 99.99% of those is pure advertising without any scientific data. On the other hand, stem cell therapy has been shown by our group in two recent publications to be very successful in treating sexual dysfunction (in men and women).

Moreover, people think stem cell therapy is something that cannot be done at the current time because most doctors do not know enough about it. The biggest problem for modern stem cell therapy is the large discrepancy between false advertising on one hand and demonstrated scientific facts on the other hand. The main thing to know is, however, that stem cell therapy represents the future of medicine for many in particular chronic degenerative diseases (from the heart to the skin to the joints to the brain among others).
Your book clarifies many technical scientific terminology about Stem Cells & medical practices. Why did you write the book and who is it for?
The book is meant to inform the consumer, a potential patient, all of us about the enormous potential of regenerative therapy which changes the practice of medicine in the very near future in order to fight chronic diseases, age related degeneration and aging itself.
What are the three most important messages in your book that you would like the public to understand?
The most important messages from the book are:
What will participants learn at your upcoming event?
Dr. von Schwarz is inviting a small group of media persons and booksellers to the Murder House as he reveals the secrets of everlasting youth and the power of stem cells in his upcoming book “The Secret World of Stem Cell Therapy”, the only comprehensive overview of the secrets and currently known facts about stem cell therapy.
From an academic and clinical point of view, stem cell therapy represents one of the most promising advances in modern medicine. While some businesses make unsubstantiated claims without having appropriate scientific evidence, The Secret World of Stem Cell Therapy provides the one and only inside view from a researcher and clinical cardiologist, who has participated in countless basic research studies and clinical trials using stem cells for different conditions over the last 25 years. The book gives readers interested in stem cell therapy appropriate advice on how to approach the subject, what questions to ask, and how to be alerted to red flags.
“Every old building has its secrets,” says Dr. von Schwarz. “Our house is known as the Rosenheim mansion, named after its architect, Alfred Rosenheim who built it in 1908 as his personal residence. Astonishingly, he moved away just a few years later for reasons that have never been revealed. Decades later, the house was bought by the Catholic Church and a chapel was built in the 1950s which has never been de-consecrated.”
“Reportedly, the nuns encountered several apparitions of dead people in the house. When we moved in, on several occasions unexplainable things happened in the house, from voices to footsteps to appearances of people who then vanished suddenly.”
“These occurrences have nothing in common with the fictional American Horror Story, but the house does have a reputation for being influential for many creative minds.”
“In my case, I started writing “The Secret World Of Stem Cell Therapy” within the walls of the Murder House. One thing that inspired me was an encounter I had that I cannot explain. I was actually touched on my shoulder while walking though the basement and then I visualized a shadow of a female body floating around me, it was strange but not scary — and believe me — as a scientist and a physician, I do not believe in ghosts or this kind of activity — or I should say, I did not until then.”
“This encounter, however, with seeing this light and the shadow, was instrumental for me to open the door for a mental rush to write the story. Being in the house was a stimulus for me to write up my experiences with stem cell research, from the early animal studies to recent data including on very sick COVID patients, to get the book done. This book is a result of the spirit in the house.”

Is there anything else you’d like to comment about?
The uniqueness of this book is that the author is an insider who has deepest knowledge of the basic research in regenerative therapy since he was among the first in the world using embryonic and stem cells in experimental animal models to treat heart disease, but also is a practicing cardiologist who has conducted several clinical trials including stem cell studies and has a very high academic reputation among the scientific community.
In contrast, other booklets that are on the market so far on stem cell therapy are either written by PhDs without much clinical knowledge or experience or by clinicians without any scientific background. Therefore, this is the only book on the market that provides everything one should know about the current state of stem cell therapy, from the scientific background to the legal and FDA regulations to the clinical trial data to the practical use for physicians interested in stem cell therapy and for the public.

Introduction
This is the one and only book you need to read if you are interested in stem cell therapy, either for yourself or a loved one as a potential patient, or if you just want to look behind the curtains to see the evidence and the reality of today’s stem cell research and its promising clinical implications.
Many books have been written by individuals who want to promote their services and sell stem cell therapies. There is a wide discrepancy between what has been published in the scientific literature and what is advertised in the media about stem cell therapies. No other topic in medicine has gained more interest from both serious researchers and the public than the promising treatments using stem cells for a wide variety of both acute and chronic illnesses.
This book’s goal is to provide people current knowledge about the secret world of stem cell therapy from the perspective of a researcher and clinician who has a wide array of experience in the basic research lab, clinical studies, and daily clinical practice treating patients with life-threatening conditions.
Even though I personally use stem cells to treat patients with certain conditions, this book is in no way meant to sell my services. In contrast, I would like to warn you not to blindly believe in unapproved stem cell therapies presented in an overwhelming amount via internet advertising. Most of these lack any scientific evidence and are presented by people without any scientific or appropriate clinical background.
1.6 Words on Anti-Aging
A controversial issue is the often misleading use of stem cell therapy for “anti-aging” purposes. We first need to ask ourselves if there is such a thing as “anti-aging.” Aging is a natural process that none of us can escape—at least, not yet. In order to overcome some unwanted “side effects” of aging (such as the loss of elasticity of the skin or the hardening of the blood vessels leading to atherosclerosis (calcification)), a basic understanding of the pathophysiology and morphological and anatomical changes that occur in our bodies’ cells during the aging process is essential.
The main side effect of aging is death.
The main risk factor for death is advanced age.
Condemning the concept of “anti-aging medicine” overall is as delu- sional as the belief in immortality. We do practice concepts of anti-aging, which can lead to a delay of cellular and tissue degeneration rather than an inhibition of aging. But this delay can result in improved quality of life, improve functionality of different organ systems and the organism as a whole, and cause people to look younger and feel better at high numer- ical ages. The use of stem cell products in the cosmetic industry in creams and gels for skin cell regeneration, for example, lacks scientific proof, and the often-used label “clinically tested” or “clinically proven” has hardly any meaning for a serious researcher unless controlled and reliable study data has been published. But our experience using stem cell therapy for skin rejuvenation over the last twenty years also has shown astonishing results and is currently highly sought by many individuals seeking to look younger and healthier.
